What does romance mean?
In general, where can you find romance?
Are there any specific types of romance novels?
What is the typical romantic storyline like?
1) Characters dislike each other (though there is clearly chemistry between them).
2) An obstacle/event happens that forces them to be with each other (i.e., the teacher makes them partners for an assignment).
3) They eventually fall in love, but there is something in the way of a happy ending (i.e., one character has a significant other).
4) They overcome this obstacle, and they have a happy ending.
My personal opinion/interpretation:
I think romance novels are a great way to escape reality. The story's almost always filled with hope and dreams, and the fact that there's usually a happy ending gives readers hope and dreams in real life. However, I also think that romance novels cause us to set high expectations for love. There will always be this ideal life (with an ideal person) moulded by the romance industry that ordinary people may not ever be able to achieve (but dream to achieve).
Creative component:
- When a character falls in love with and pursues another character, there is romance.
- Has to do with deep feelings of love, passion, and connection.
